Program Description

Program Information ___________

• Join the faculty directed program to Hong Kong, China with the Communication Science Disorders department to learn about differences in clinical practices of another country. Students may have the opportunity to observe or to practice on some patients.
• Students will be able to visit other related speech, language, and audiology clinics in the Hong Kong area.

Each student will meet with Dr. Heidi Harbers to discuss their individual learning outcomes for the independent study. Students may elect to focus on culture, education, medical aspects of audiology, and/or speech-language pathology in Hong Kong or another pertinent topic that receives instructor approval. Based on each student's learning goals/topic of independent study, students will complete pre-program assignments (reading, group discussions), keep a reflection journal, and write a 10-15 page paper (graduate students will write a 15-20 page paper with an oral presentation to the instructor) upon their return.

• This program is designed for Communication Science Disorder majors to explore language, culture, and dialect in Hong Kong.
• This program is open to all majors, and to both graduate and undergraduate students, but preference will be given to Communication Science Disorder Majors
• Students will take ONE of the following courses: CSD 287/299 Undergraduate Independent Study (2-3 credit hours) OR CSD 400 Graduate Independent Study (2 credit hours)

Prerequisites _______________

• 2 full semesters at ISU or other college/university
• Minimum cumulative 3.0 GPA for both undergraduate and graduate participants
