Program Description

Location ________________

• The six-week Summer Programme in European Studies (SES) offers you a great European experience in Maastricht, Netherlands
• Maastricht, birthplace of the European Union and situated on the border of the Netherlands, Belgium and Germany, is a picture perfect European town, with layers of history waiting to be discovered in its medieval city center
• The local culture is vibrant, there are many art and music festivals that take place during the summer
•The Western Europe study tour takes you on a journey to Brussels, Reims, Paris, Strasbourg and Luxembourg.
•Deepen your understanding of the EU by visiting the Parliamentarium and European Commission in Brussels and participating in a lobbying and advocacy training at a leading consultancy in Public Affairs and Relations.
•Marvel at the Notre-Dame Cathedral in Reims, a UNESCO World Heritage site, and visit the world’s largest international market and soak up the multitude of culture in Paris, the City of Light.
•Explore the majestic Palace of Versailles and wonder at its splendor.
•Visit the Plenary Chamber of the European Parliament and the Council of Europe in picturesque Strasbourg and Court of Auditors in Luxembourg, and gain in-depth knowledge of the process of European integration at first hand.
• The program includes a day trip to Amsterdam, a city with old world charm, intimate squares, 17th century mansions, canals, and bikes everywhere





Academics ________________

• All courses are taught in English
• Classes are four days a week
• The program is divided into two 'block periods' of three weeks each, students take one course per period for a total of two courses
• During block one all students will participate in the Study Tour Western Europe
• During block two students will take one of the following courses: Financial Market Reform in the EU, Economics of European Integration, Current EU Topics in Law and Politics. • Business majors and economics majors interested in Europe will find this program to be an excellent fit

• The SES program is 6 weeks long

Prerequisites _______________

• 2 full semesters at ISU or other college/university
• 3.0 GPA requirement






Housing & Meals _______________

• Students will stay in double or single rooms at the International Student Guesthouse of Maastricht University
• Rooms in the P-building have a private kitchen and rooms in the C-building have communal cooking facilities; in both buildings the bathrooms are shared

Scholarships ________________

•Participants may apply for the CAT Scholarship for this program. $5,000-$10,000 of funds are available. Please submit the application to Dr. David Cleeton by email dlcleet@ilstu.edu by the deadline of March 1, 2015. To apply, please see the Maastricht Program CAT Scholarship Application Form at the top of this brochure page.
• The Economics Department will provide a $2,000 Tuition Grant for first 10 participants who enroll and are accepted. This grant will lower the tuition fees charged to the students.
